She was originally planned as a battlecruiser, but upon signing the Washington Naval Treaty, instead she was converted to a aircraft carrier. Made the flagship of the First Air Fleet, she was present at a number of actions, including Pearl Harbor and Rabaul. Severely damaged at Midway, she was scuttled. Although her captain, Captain Aoki, wished to go down the the ship, he was forcibly removed by his crew, and resigned from the service a fre months later.
